SPIN Module in Paediatric Diabetes Care
A Special Interest (SPIN) module in Paediatric Diabetes Care documents the additional training and experience that UK level 3 trainees can complete in a 12-18 month placement. This will allow trainees to be the local lead and part of the clinical network providing care for children who need specialist paediatric diabetes care.
All trainees that would like to complete SPIN in Paediatric Diabetes Care must submit an application which is available on the RCPCH e-Portfolio Risr (previously Kaizen). Applications typically open twice per year in November (to start in the following February/March) and May (to start in the following August/September). The applicant will need Training Programme Director and Head of School approval, as they will also commit to ensure the necessary SPIN placements within Specialty Paediatric Training. Applications can be made from ST4 onwards under Progress+. Post Certificate of Completion of Clinical training (CCT) SPIN modules can also be completed.
Once the RCPCH College Specialty Advisory Committee (CSAC) has approved commencing SPIN, the SPIN curriculum will be added to the trainee’s ePortfolio. The trainee will need to upload and link evidence to demonstrate that they are meeting the SPIN competencies.
The curriculum [Diabetes SPIN 2021.pdf (rcpch.ac.uk)] consists of six learning outcomes within which a number of key capabilities exist. Evidence of competency in these domains must be linked to the e-portfolio and will form the basis of assessment for SPIN completion.
Upon completion of their SPIN, trainees are expected to:
- Provide sufficient evidence on e-portfolio of having achieved all of the competencies outlined in the RCPCH Diabetes SPIN Curriculum, through linking events to the learning outcomes
- Submit a SPIN Completion Report on e-portfolio for SPIN Supervisor to complete. Once the CSAC Chair is satisfied with the evidence provided, the SPIN Team will be able to confirm completion of the SPIN module and achievement of all required competences. The trainee will then be issued with a SPIN Module Certificate from the RCPCH.
Please do contact the CSAC team if you have any questions or concerns regarding your training. Contact details are available on the RCPCH website.
General with an Interest Training in Endocrinology
At present, no separate SPIN module exists for paediatric endocrinology for general paediatricians with an interest. However, the BSPED would encourage any trainee who is considering a career in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes at a secondary care (special interest) level to refer to the level 1-3 competencies in the RCPCH curriculum.
