37th Meeting of the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes

Reading

10-12 November 2009
Reading Town Hall, Reading

We wish to welcome you to Reading for the 37th Annual BSPED meeting. The Town Hall is well located in the centre of Reading five minutes walk from Reading Station and has excellent facilities so we hope you have a very enjoyable meeting. Heathrow airport is 15 miles distance and is served by the Railair buses with a service every 20 min and the drop-off is Reading station. However car parking in central Reading can be a challenge!

Reading is traditionally accepted as being Saxon for "(Place of) Readda's People". Reading Abbey was founded by King Henry I in 1121 as a private mausoleum for his family. The ruins where Henry 1 is buried are close to the Town Hall. Next to the abbey ruins you’ll also find Reading Prison, where Oscar Wilde was famously housed and where he penned ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol.’ Directly west of London, in the county of Royal Berkshire is Reading, also referred to as the Capital of the Thames Valley and just 35 miles from central London with the added convenience of the nearby location of the M4 motorway.

Aside from Reading’s history much of the town is in fact very recent including the new Oracle shopping centre and the many business parks with an IT theme, currently attracting many people to move with their work to the Reading area. This renewed interest in the town has had the knock on effect of better transport links, new housing and plenty of entertainment to give the area a much-needed boost. Reading Festival held every August over three days and  consists of a whole host of live bands from well-known names to new faces, with separate dance and comedy stages that always proves a huge success.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital is now one of the largest district hospitals in the UK and the modern paediatric department rebuilt several years ago serves a population of almost 100,000 children and young people. The children’s diabetes clinic was established more than 30 years ago; the paediatric endocrine service was set up only 22 years ago and has expanded in the last 5 years. We have fortunate to always have had close links with paediatric endocrine colleagues in Oxford.

The programme should have something to suit all tastes. The meeting kicks off with the CME training day on Tuesday and the main meeting lasting starts in the afternoon. We wish to give a special welcome our diabetes nurse specialist colleagues for their meeting on Wednesday and specialist endocrine nurses for theirs on Thursday. Do bring friends and family- there are numerous museums, cafes and bars nearby and lovely countryside within 20-30 min drive. Enjoy; we look forward to meeting you.
