36th Meeting of the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes

5-7 November 2008
Brangwyn Hall, Swansea

Croeso i Abertawe

I am delighted to welcome you to Swansea for this year’s annual gathering of the BSPED.  I can guarantee you a very warm welcome;  we have an excellent academic and clinical programme.  I also hope that the “out of hours” experiences will be to your satisfaction.

Swansea is Wales’ premier maritime city.  It is blessed with a wonderful 6 mile curved beach.  Just beyond, the Gower peninsula, Britain’s first area of outstanding natural beauty, benefits from glorious coastal views and walks. To the north we have stunning valleys, glorious waterfalls and, for the intrepid, challenging potholing experiences.

Swansea is a traditional sea port, claiming literary, academic and sporting icons.   It has become far more than Dylan Thomas’ “lovely ugly town”. One of our local girls Catherine Zeta Jones is one of the most recognised beauties in the world.  Our sporting traditions are represented currently by our winning Ospreys rugby team whose members made up most of this year’s Six Nations Grand Slam winning side.

It is my honour and privilege to be Swansea’s longest serving consultant paediatrician.  Our Department of Child Health has a hugely committed group of clinical staff working mainly from Singleton Hospital, with a significant presence at Morriston Hospital.  Earlier this year another round of NHS reforms led to the creation of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust, the largest in Wales and the country’s newest University Trust.  The last decade has seen significant academic developments.  A graduate entry Clinical School was created in 2001.  Our first “home grown” students are due to quality this year.   As of 2009 Swansea will have its own Charter and its own Medical Degree.

I am particularly delighted to welcome our nurse specialists for both diabetes and paediatric endocrinology to the conference.  Both groups have their own session which I hope will complement the medical presentations.  The whole conference is taking place in the Brangwyn Hall, a magnificent edifice large enough to accommodate everybody.  It is situated a very short walk from the sea front and within walking distance of the main hotels.  We are looking forward to receiving high quality submissions for the oral and poster presentations.  The programme includes several keynote lectures and interesting symposia.

I look forward to meeting you in November.  Do bring your family with you and take the opportunity of extending your stay over the weekend.  It might be a bit breezy in November but the scenery will be as gorgeous as ever and a traditional Welsh welcome will greet you wherever you go.
