DECISION MAKING FOR SpRs UNDERTAKING HST IN PAEDIATRIC ENDOCRINOLOGY/DIABETES

YEAR 1 - YEAR 2

Core HST:

  • General Paediatrics
  • Neonatology
  • Community

Early in YEAR 2 need to decide on proposed career path:

    A General Paediatrics

    B General Paediatrics with a secondary interest

    C Tertiary Specialist

Career path must not be immutable - Discuss in YEAR 2 with Paediatric Endocrinologist and agree:

    I Appropriateness of plan

    II Outline training programme

Assuming agreed, discuss with Regional Adviser and Programme Director re. plan and YEAR 3 post.

YEAR 3
  • Broad experience in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes
  • Agree full training programme and submit to Endocrine & Diabetes CSAC of RCPCH for comment. Endocrine Number awarded and recorded centrally.
  • Include goals (educational/audit/projects) to assess suitability/ aptitude/ commitment of SpR
  • Regular appraisal and assessment by Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist Supervisor
  • End of YEAR 3 meet with supervising sub-specialist and agree to continue/not continue with training (liaise with Regional Adviser)

Three options:

  • 1 Return to General Paediatric training/alternative sub-speciality training
  • 2 Further 6 months to 1 year of training in Paediatric Endocrinology/Diabetes to give further period of assessment prior to completion of Secondary Level training in Years 4 and 5
  • 3 Definitely continue with full sub-speciality tertiary training*

* Need to intercollate 1-3 Years Fellowship to obtain Higher Degree

YEAR 4 - YEAR 5

Complete Tertiary Level training**

** Full Tertiary Training may need to be undertaken at more than one accredited centre dependent on resources available
