Introduction

  Back Contents Next

This document sets out the minimum requirements for training in the subspeciality of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes. The document considers general and specific aspects of training in endocrinology and delineates the syllabus. General consideration is given to the structure of European Training and to the organisation of training in Europe. Training must lead somewhere and the current manpower situation in the United Kingdom will be reviewed in further documents. Finally, training is not simply confined to the Calman years but forms an integral part of Continuing Medical Education. This too is considered in part.

The subspeciality of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes was recognised as such by the Confederation of European Specialists in Paediatrics (CESP). The situation in the United Kingdom is that pure subspeciality status is, as yet, not recognised in the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST). The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) is prepared to consider issuing certification in the following:-

a). General Paediatrics with a Special Interest.
b). Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes as a Subspecialist

In order to advise the RCPCH on the award of CCST and to monitor training standards, training centres and trainers and trainees the RCPCH has asked each of the subspecialities to provide advice to the College Speciality Advisory Committee (CSAC). The composition, constitution and role of the CSAC advisory panel in Endocrinology and Diabetes is depicted in Appendix 1.
