“The saddest thing about any man is that he be ignorant, and the most exciting thing is that he knows.”
Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, 871-899
We are delighted to be able to welcome you to Winchester, a culturally rich medieval city and former capital city of England. King Alfred the Great, an Anglo-Saxon monarch, ruled from Winchester from 871-899 and was responsible for the cross shaped street system which is still evident today.
From the late 18th century, Winchester was the leading medical centre outside London - one of the reasons Jane Austen moved here from her nearby home at Chawton. She was laid to rest at Winchester Cathedral, Winchester's major landmark and one of the largest cathedrals in Europe.
Winchester is also well known for the Great Hall of its castle, which was built in the 12th century where King Arthur's Round Table has hung from at least 1463.
Our venue, Guildhall Winchester, is another Winchester landmark: a beautiful Victorian building built in the Gothic style and situated in the heart of the city.
We have put together an educating and exciting programme for BSPED 2014 which will begin with the CME Training Day on Wednesday 12 November with themes of Endocrine oncology & late effects and Reproductive endocrinology.
On Thursday 13 November the endocrine programme will include symposia on vitamin D deficiency and adrenal disease, and opportunities to access both oral and poster presentations. Diabetes highlights include obesity in children, type 2 diabetes, psychology and school care plans.
The diabetes programme on Friday 14 November will include a symposium summarising the recent data from trials in type I diabetes, and a debate on whether “Children with diabetes should be managed centrally”. In addition to the oral and poster presentations, there will be a plenary lecture on the future for a child with type I diabetes.
The Endocrine Nurse meeting will run in parallel to the sessions taking place on Friday and this year will focus on Prader Willi Syndrome.
We very much look forward to seeing you in Winchester for an exciting and enjoyable meeting.
