Chairman: Ieuan Hughes Ieuan Hughes occupies the Foundation Chair of Paediatrics at the University of Cambridge and is Honorary Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He also has an Honorary appointment as Paediatric Endocrinologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children where he is a member of the multi-disciplinary team caring for children with disorders of sex development (DSD). Ieuan graduated from Cardiff University Medical School and was subsequently awarded an MD with distinction from the University of Wales. His postgraduate training took place at Hammersmith Hospital, University College Hospital, Bristol Children’s Hospital as well as specific training in endocrinology in Canada. He was appointed to a Senior Lectureship in Cardiff, then Reader before moving to Cambridge. His clinical and research interests relate primarily to DSD and underpinned by a laboratory-based programme of research that focuses on the molecular mechanisms of androgen action. Ieuan has been a member of the BSPED for many years and hosted the annual meeting when he worked in Cardiff. He was invited by the BSPED Executive to Chair a newly established Clinical Committee of the Society and is now in the third year of his four term of office. He is a Senior Editor of Archives of Disease of Childhood and is on the Editorial Board of several endocrine journals. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and has recently been made a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. Ieuan is a past Secretary and President of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and a recipient of the Andrea Prader Prize of that Society. In his spare time, Ieuan pursues his passion for music, walks the hills (not the Fens!) and succumbs to the perils of supporting Welsh rugby! |

Clinical Committee Officer: Fran Ackland
Fran Ackland is a consultant paediatrician at Northampton General Hospital She trained at Birmingham Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Bristol Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. She leads the diabetes service and the endocrine service in Northampton, a moderately large district general hospital. She holds an honorary contract at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and assists in the endocrine service there. Fran was asked to join the executive committee of BSPED some years ago to represent the interests of members working as paediatric endocrinologists within district general hospitals. She has subsequently been a member of CSAC and is now one of two training advisors in paediatric endocrinology. She joined the clinical committee when this was established in 2009, and is again able to provide the perspective of those working in secondary care. |

Clinical Committee Officer: Tim Cheetham
Dr Tim Cheetham works as a Paediatric Endocrinologist in Newcastle-upon-Tyne having trained in a variety of units including Oxford and Cambridge. He manages young people with a broad spectrum of endocrine problems including diabetes.He has a particular interest in thyroid disorders in Children and is currently involved in 2 National studies in this area. The first is a British Paediatric Surveillance Unit study which is looking at the incidence of Congenital Hypothyroidism in the UK. The second is a study of thyrotoxicosis management which is trying to work out how best to use anti-thyroid drug (Carbimazole). He is also the local investigator for a number of National diabetes studies. Other clinical interests include autoimmune endocrine disease, calcium disorders and diabetes insipidus. |

Diabetes Officer: Julie Edge
Dr Julie Edge has been a Consultant in Paediatric Diabetes since 1997, and is the Lead Clinician for children's and adolescent diabetes in Oxfordshire, UK. She has been involved in diabetes research since 1987 and major projects include studies on cerebral oedema and diabetic ketoacidosis. Prior to this she carried out a research project looking at insulin resistance and growth hormone levels, leading to a Doctorate of Medicine. She has been involved in drawing up the British Society of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes guidelines for diabetic Ketoacidosis and was also a member of the writing group for the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes guidelines for diabetic ketoacidosis. She is the clinical lead for the Oxford Regional Children and Young People's Diabetes Network and is involved nationally on the NHS Diabetes Programme Board for the Department of Health, and was on the steering committee for the UK National Paediatric Diabetes Audit. She was until recently the chair of the Association of Children's Diabetes Clinicians in England. |

Clinical Guidelines Officer: Shankar Kanumakala
I passionately believe in providing the best possible healthcare supervision to every child with health problems. I support BSPED’s aims and objectives to improve the health outcomes of all children with endocrine problems and/or diabetes and influence healthcare policy and processes through active engagement with other organisations and government. As Clinical Guidelines Officer, I am facilitating the review and updating of current guidelines and developing more practical guidelines to guide clinical management of both common and uncommon conditions. I would heartily welcome other BSPED members who are keen to join us in the development of these guidelines or who would be happy to advice us of new areas where guidelines are necessary. |

Press Officer: Tabitha Randell
Tabitha Randell has been a consultant in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes at Nottingham Children's Hospital since 2005. Prior to that, she spent 2 1/2 years working as a general paediatrician with a specialist interest in diabetes and endocrinology in a small DGH, so has a broad experience of the varied issues and challenges working in different clinical environments. She is the Media Officer of the BSPED and was a founder member of the ACDC (Association of Children's Diabetes Clinicians). She chairs the Midlands Paediatric Endocrine Group and the East Midlands Paediatric Diabetes Network. She is also currently the NHS Diabetes Clinical Lead for developing the Paediatric Diabetes Best Practice Tariff, which it is hoped will be introduced from 2012. Actively involved in research, she is currently PI for several diabetes and endocrine studies across the East Midlands. |

Audit and Peer Review Officer: Nick Shaw
Nick Shaw trained in paediatrics in Leeds, Liverpool and Birmingham. He developed an interest in paediatric calcium and bone metabolism whilst a Lecturer at the University of Leeds which he continued when starting to train in Paediatric Endocrinology as a Lecturer at the University of Liverpool. He completed his endocrine training in Birmingham where he has been a Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist since 1994. In addition to Endocrinology and Diabetes, he established a multidisciplinary service for children with all forms of metabolic bone disease. In 2011 Birmingham Children's Hospital was designated as a centre for complex childhood Osteogenesis Imperfecta by the Advisory Group for National Specialised Services. He is a Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, the organiser of a postgraduate training course in paediatric calcium and bone metabolism and co-editor of the book Calcium and Bone Disorders in Children and Adolescents". He was previously secretary of the British Paediatric and Adolescent Bone Group and the Bone Club of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology. He has been a member of BSPED since 1990 and is currently an Associate Editor for Archives of Disease in Childhood. |
